Thanks to YOU from CEO Sara Deren

Dear Friends,

Even though fall is upon us—complete with pumpkins on my doorstep waiting to be carved—I’m still reliving the moments of this past summer, collecting memories from camper families, volunteers, and staff who joined us for our 13 camp programs across the U.S.

One of my favorite parts of this work is hearing the personal stories that fill each summer with meaning. These memories exist in large part because of you. Whether you donated, volunteered, sent your child to camp, or simply cheered on our work from afar, you’ve been part of creating something truly magical.

Here’s what you helped make possible this summer:

Together, we brought 1,244 kids and teens to camp—the highest number ever! Friendships were born and rekindled, jokes were shared, cartwheels tumbled down grassy hills, and campfires glowed with laughter and warmth. Campers challenged themselves, tried new activities like tennis and rock climbing, and learned the fine art of not burning marshmallows (too much).

More importantly, campers talked openly about their person who died, swapped memories, and lit candles to honor them. Through each story shared, they felt a little less alone in their grief, surrounded by others who truly understood.

Knowing that 83% of our campers returned from previous years fills me up. It tells me they love the camp experience, and it speaks to the strength they’re building each year to navigate their grief. And I never take for granted that 80% of our volunteers and staff return each year—many taking unpaid leave to show up and support these kids on their grief journey.

In a world that often feels divided, I’m reminded that at camp, we come together, no matter our differences. Here, we find common ground and lift each other up.

We have exciting growth on the horizon, and I look forward to sharing those plans soon. But for now, this is simply a thank-you letter for being part of this incredible community. Thank you for the love, support, and hope you bring to our grieving kids.

With all my gratitude,
Sara
