Shaving Cream Prints

Activity

  • Squirt a generous amount of shaving cream on a flat surface (table or counter). Use your squeegee or straight edge to spread the shaving cream into a canvas.

  • Use food coloring and toothpicks to “paint” an image onto your shaving cream canvas. Keep in mind that when you print your painting onto paper it will be a mirror image of what you create on your shaving cream canvas. (See pictures below.)

  • Once your painting is finished, lay a piece of paper on top of your canvas and gently press the paper into the shaving cream.

  • Peel the paper back, lay on a flat surface, and use a squeegee or straight edge to remove the excess shaving cream revealing your print.

  • You can make repeated prints of the same image and see how the painting fades (see below) or make abstract images by mixing colors on your canvas. Get creative!

Talking points/tips

  • Process over product. Spend time playing with the shaving cream after you finish your print. What does it feel like? What does it smell like? What does it sound like? Describe with 3 adjectives.

  • DISCLAIMER: Hands will likely be stained for a couple of days from the food coloring. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy:)
