Letter Home Activity

You might be missing your person more than usual right now and wondering about ways to feel more connected with them.  One way to do that is to write what, at camp, we call a Letter Home. It’s a letter that you write to your person telling them how you’re feeling, what you are doing or anything that you’d like them to know.

Materials needed

1. Something to write on.

2. Something to write with.

Getting started

Once you have decided to write a letter to your person, you might know exactly what you want to say, or might not know where to start.  If that’s the case for you, here are some ideas:

  • Dear…

  • It has been…since I saw you last

  • During that time I have felt…

  • I have done some things that I think you’d like to hear about. They are…

  • Right now, there are some things going on.  Let me tell you about them.

  • I have some friends that I think you’d like to know about.

  • Our family is different.  This is how…

  • I’ve learned some things about myself.  Let me tell you about them.

  • There are times when I really wish you were here to see me do…

  • Sometimes there are things I’d like to ask you…

Then what?

Some people like to keep their letters and add to the pile each year as an ongoing conversation with their person. You may want to share your letter with someone that knew your person as a way to remember them together. Often times, a camper or volunteer will read a letter at camp during a campfire. If you’d like to share your letter (info@experience.camp) with us to share with our community here, we’d love to be part of this process with you. Or you can do anything else you find meaningful with the physical representation of these words and feelings. This letter is for you.
